“Oh my gosh, there are visitors coming in an hour!”
Yeah, that is a horror scene to me, unexpected visitors that just sneak up on you 🙂
I have a method though. It’s not foolproof and I sometimes fail badly, but most of the time it works like a charm.
Here are three simple steps to accomplish tha. Use these in each room, starting with the most important one (like the living room) and then continuing in the others.
Step 1: get rid of all the stuff
You will need a big, sturdy shopping bag and a garbage bag for this one. Go through the room, starting in one corner. Gather up everything that doesn’t belong in the room, or at least in the corner and either toss it in the shopping bag or in the garbage bag. If it is something small that belongs somewhere else in the room, you can keep it in your hand until you are in the designated area. Otherwise, keep tossing it in the bag. You can straighten throw pillows in this round too. When you are done, put the bag somewhere where the visitors won’t come (bedroom) and the garbage in the bin.
Step 2: speed cleaning
I use a spray bottle with a mix of vinegar and water and some drops of lemon and eucalyptus essential oil. You can make that, or use your favourite cleaner for this. Also get a soft cotton cloth. Start in the first corner and spray the cleaner on every surface you see and then rub it down. Also, use the cleaner on spots on the floor. Oh and, if the room in question is the toilet, use your toilet cleaner instead of the spray bottle 🙂
Step 3: vacuum
Get out the vacuum cleaner and start in the first corner. The room will be clean in no time at all.
If you have some time left over, you can put everything that’s in the shopping bag in their rightful spot, but that’s not necessary as a visitor prep.
Bonus tip: don’t do anything else while you are flash decluttering. Don’t think about what you are finding. If it isn’t trash, just toss it in the bag. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted either. There are visitors coming after all! 🙂
